History

Early Life/The Gang

As a child, Matthew was shifted between families and foster homes, never staying at one place for more then a few months. He was a very quiet and shy child, but once he became comfortable with a family, he became very temperamental, never quite trusting whoever was taking care of him. Matt's lack of security led him to run away from his last family around his early teens. Living a life of petty theft, in the slums of the district of Leaftwine, Matt and several other young and homeless teenagers formed an unofficial gang. They worked together to help steal food, money, and any other accessory they needed to live. After a few years, the gang purchased a home. As the gang grew older, the work became more challenging. What started out as petty theft turned to higher stake crimes, such as assassination's and kidnappings. Whatver the job called for, the gang would do, so long as it paid. Many members died or quit as years went on. Starting rather low on the social chain, after a decade of work Matt became the unofficial leader of the gang, who often called him "Chief." Matthew still views the gang as his only real family.

Matthew Shepard and Renee Catheline (Pre-Campaign)

Though Matt had a home with his gang, he did not always have his needs met. Often, there was not enough food and other necessities for everyone in the gang. Particularly in his early days, when Matt was low on the hierarchy of the group, he was deprived of goods. Renee Catheline came into Matthew Shepard's life passing him on the street side, where he sat sleeping, she offered him food and a place to stay. Matt, still in his teenage years, always felt guilty taking from her, but he had no other option. The two quickly became close, they would exchange books, discuss news, events, etc. Renee would later provide a place to stay for Matt after he left the Gang. Renee also was Matt's in to the White Rose.

Multiple Sclerosis and The White Rose

One day, while working out the details to a job, Matthew Shepard passed out at his desk. After an unofficial meeting with a doctor (who was related to one of the Gang members), Matt was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Telling Josh, his closest friend in the gang, the two decided it was best to keep his condition secret. Having no means of getting Medication, Matt's perspective of life had radically changed. Matt decided to quit the gang, and set out on a goal to redeem himself from the countless murders he had committed. Consulting Renee Catheline, Matt sought out The White Rose, and viewed it as his only shot, before the grip of disease captures him.
